The iittala Kastehelmi Bowl: A 60-Year-Old Design That Still Sells Out

Kastehelmi means "dewdrop" in Finnish, and it's the perfect name for this pattern: a ring of pressed glass beads circling the base of every piece. Oiva Toikka designed it for iittala in 1964, and it's been in continuous production ever since — which says more about a design than any review can.

The 230ml bowl is the size most people actually reach for: too small for a full salad, exactly right for nuts, berries, a side of rice, or the little dish of soy sauce that always seems to go missing. The pressed pattern isn't just decorative — it hides water spots and light scratches far better than a smooth glass surface, so it still looks new after years of daily use and dishwasher cycles.

It's sold in sets and pairs for gifting, but buying a single bowl to see if the pattern earns a permanent spot in your cabinet is a reasonable way to start. Clear is the original and the easiest to mix with other glassware you already own; iittala has also released the pattern in seasonal colors if you want to build a set gradually.
